UT Permian Basin men’s basketball coach Josh Newman announced the additions of AJ Holland and Zane Gibson to his coaching staff.
Both Holland and Gibson come to the Falcons after spending time with Newman at UA Fort Smith; Gibson the last two seasons and Holland joining UAFS prior to last season. The pair helped the Lions to a share of the Heartland Conference Regular Season Championship behind a 24-6 record and 12-4 mark in league play. The Lions advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons.
Holland played his freshman season at Rice, averaging two points and one rebound per game in 26 games, averaging 12.1 minutes.
The next season, he scored 5.2 points with 3.6 rebounds and 2.96 assists per game in 28 games as a sophomore at College of Central Florida.
He completed his college career at Sioux Falls. His junior season, Holland scored 6.5 points with 3.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals in 28 games while averaging 27 minutes per game. He increased that to 10.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 28 minutes per game over 27 contests in his senior season.
Prior to joining Newman at UAFS, Holland worked for Elite Hoops Basketball in Atlanta, Ga., where he helped organize Nike Basketball camps and offered individual instruction and training.
Gibson spent six seasons at Middle Tennessee State; four as a player and two as a graduate assistant.
As a player, Middle Tennessee State won four conference championships, and the 2012-13 team set the school record with 27 wins and a Sun Belt Championships.
Gibson’s senior class left Middle Tennessee as the all-time winningest class in school history, amassing 95 total victories over four seasons.
Before going to UAFS, Gibson spent two seasons on the coaching staff at MTSU as a grad assistant where he graduated with his masters in Sports Management in 2016.
At UAFS, he helped coach the Lions to a pair of Heartland Conference Championships, a Heartland Conference Tournament Championship and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
