Western Texas College adds Hammond as Assistant Basketball Coach

Western Texas College is very pleased to welcome Carson Hammond as the new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach.

“Carson being a part of the program here as a player made this choice very easy for me,” said Matt Hardy, the WTC Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “His experience here in Snyder as a player will be instrumental in assuring a smooth transition as he gets settled in his capacity here as an assistant coach.”

Hammond spent the last season as an Assistant Coach for the Howard College Men’s Basketball team. Hammond’s first season saw the Hawks post a record of 19-11, as well as being ranked as high as 8th in the NJCAA Poll. He was part of a staff that sent five players to Division One Universities, as well as coaching a NJCAA 2nd Team All-American.

Prior to joining the Hawks, Hammond was a member of the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor Men’s Basketball (UMHB) Team. In his two seasons at UMHB, the Crusaders were 2x ASC Regular Season Champions and won the ASC Conference Tournament. In his Senior campaign, Hammond helped the Crusaders advance to the NCAA Elite 8, while torching the nets with a blistering 48% 3-point clip, the 2nd highest 3-point percentage in the entire NCAA. Hammond was named to the All-ASC Honorable Mention Team, as well as the All-ASC Academic Team, and the NABC Honors Court.

Prior to his playing career at UMHB, Hammond played for Western Texas College from 2018-2020. He was a member of the 2019-2020 Westerner squad that went 23-11, was ranked as high as 11th in the NJCAA Poll and upset the #3 Team in the NJCAA to advance to the NJCAA Region 5 Semi-Finals.

Hammond earned his Associate of Arts from Western Texas College and his Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

“I am excited to have Carson back with us here in Snyder. It is always a pleasure seeing former players excel in their chosen field and I knew from being around Carson when he played here that he would make an outstanding coach and leader of young men.” added Hardy.

“I know he will be a great addition to our basketball program as well as our institution.”
