A bunch of movement on the staff at Youngstown State…
I have heard that assistant coach Steve Hall has departed to become an administrator and head boys basketball coach at Detroit’s Cass Tech (Hall is the all-time leading scorer there). Hall had been at YSU for the past three seasons, and was also an assistant at Duquesne. Before joining the college ranks, he was the head coach at Detroit Northwestern where he won the Detroit Public School League Championship in 2008. He will be replaced by former Illinois-Chicago assistant Stew Robinson. Robinson played at Indiana from 1982-86, and also spent eight seasons as an assistant at Texas Tech under Head Coaches Bob Knight and Pat Knight.
Assistant coach Brian DePaoli is also departing the YSU staff. DePaoli had worked with head coach Jerry Slocum for 12 seasons – two at Gannon University, and the past 10 at Youngstown State. Current DBO Kevin Bruinsma will be elevated to replace DePaoli. He has been at YSU since 2013, and was the Director of Basketball Technology at the University of Portland before that. Bruinsma also spent three seasons as a graduate manager and video coordinator for Cleveland State.
These moves are expected to be made official with in the next week or two. Additionally, Youngstown State will now be looking for a DBO. Once I track down a job description, I will post it in our jobs section.
