Texas A&M International adds Lewis to MBB staff

The Texas A&M International University men’s basketball coach Mac McConnell announced that he has hired David Lewis as the new assistant coach. Coach Lewis joins TAMIU after being the associate head coach at Angelo State for the past seven years.

“I’m excited for Coach Lewis to be joining our staff here at TAMIU,” TAMIU’s head coach Mac McConnell said. “Coach Lewis has a wealth of knowledge in the Lone Star Conference and is known for being a tireless worker and an excellent recruiter. He has high standards for academic success off the court and was recognized as one of the Most Impactful Division 2 Assistant Men’s Basketball Coaches by Silver Waves Media. David will play a significant role in what we are trying to build here at TAMIU as we aim to be a championship basketball program and continue to develop our team culture.”

In his seven-year spell at San Angelo, Lewis helped Head Coach Cinco Boone develop a team that put up a total of 129 wins and averaged 18 wins per season. During this time, Angelo was able to make the NCAA Regional Tournament on four separate occasions and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2016.

Before his time at Angelo State, Lewis spent time working with the Orlando Magic and the San Antonio Spurs G-League affiliate.

Graduating from the University of Texas, Coach Lewis received his Bachelor’s in Mathematics and went on to receive his Master’s in Physical Education. He is married to Elizabeth Hernandez, and they have one son named Luke.
