Waynesburg University head men’s basketball coach Tim Fusina is excited to announce the hiring of Ben Roberts as his new assistant coach. He brings a rich coaching background that includes multiple stops at the collegiate and camp levels with him to the Yellow Jackets.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the Waynesburg community and become a part of the basketball program,” Roberts said. “Being here is an opportunity I feel extremely blessed to have, and I cannot wait to get to work with Coach Fusina and meet the rest of the team.”
Roberts comes to Waynesburg from the University of Rio Grande, an Ohio-based NAIA institution, where he spent last year as the assistant coach with the Red Storm’s varsity men’s team and the head coach of Rio Grande’s men’s junior varsity squad. His lengthy list of responsibilities included practice preparation and execution, workouts, scouting report preparation, summer camp preparation, recruiting and academic success.
Prior to arriving in Ohio, Roberts spent a year as a graduate assistant coach at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he was heavily involved in the Wildcats’ recruiting, film study and practices. His coaching career in Randolph began after spending one year as a freshman member of the men’s basketball team.
Along with his scholastic coaching experiences, Roberts has worked at a multitude of camps for various age groups and coached several youth teams ranging in age from seven to 17. He has also been involved with a wide range of fund-raising efforts.
“Throughout the search process, Ben set himself apart from the other candidates both on paper and in his interviews. With his experience in recruiting, perimeter skill development and his ability to assist in the day-to-day operations of a collegiate basketball program, Ben is the perfect addition to our staff,” Fusina said. “Along with his experience with two different programs, Ben brings enthusiasm, knowledge, and a tremendous work ethic that I know will help our program’s continued development into what we think will be the best basketball program in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.”
Roberts completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Randolph in May of 2020, before earning a Master of Arts degree in Coaching and Sports Leadership in 2021. Before enrolling in college, he was a three-year member of the Davidson (N.C.) Day School boys basketball team. He served as team captain during his senior campaign.
“I have known since I was a sophomore in high school that I wanted to become a college basketball coach,” Roberts said. “I have had many great experiences in other places that have helped my love for coaching grow, and I am looking forward to continuing this journey at Waynesburg.”
Along with his duties as assistant men’s basketball coach, Roberts will also serve as Waynesburg’s head equipment manager.
Waynesburg is coming off a 2021-22 season that saw it post its highest overall win total (14-14) since going 18-11 during the 2014-15 campaign. Its 9-9 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) contests features the program’s most league victories since the 2015-16 schedule. The season concluded with a first-round triumph in the PAC tournament and an appearance in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament.
“I am looking forward to watching Ben assist in the development of our student-athletes both on and off the court,” Fusina said. “Ben is a tremendous young coach and a great person and will do great things for our program.”
