Brooks named Head Basketball Coach at D2 Mississippi College

Mississippi College has named Josh Brooks as the next head coach of the Choctaws men’s basketball program, as announced by Athletic Director Kenny Bizot on Tuesday.

Brooks, a Mississippi College alumnus, returns to Clinton after a successful tenure as the head coach at Belhaven University, where he led the Blazers to back-to-back Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Championship Game appearances. Under his leadership, the Blazers posted a 21-5 record in the 2024-25 season, following an 18-10 record in 2023-24, marking the program’s most wins in a single season since 2013-14. Belhaven also recorded consecutive 15-win seasons for the first time since 2010-12 under Brooks’ direction.

“We are thrilled to welcome Josh Brooks back to Mississippi College as our head men’s basketball coach,” said Bizot. “Josh is a proven leader with a strong track record of success at multiple levels. His experience, passion for the game, and commitment to developing student-athletes make him the right fit to lead our program forward.”

Prior to his time at Belhaven, Brooks served as the head coach at Jackson Academy for four seasons, where he compiled a 91-48 overall record. During his tenure, he guided the Raiders to three state tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish at the Overall State Tournament in his final season. Brooks also led Jackson Academy to the Overall State Elite Eight (2020-21) and the Overall State Final Four (2018-19).

Brooks is no stranger to Mississippi College basketball, having previously spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach for the Choctaws from 2008-18. During his time on the MC bench, he helped guide the team to six American Southwest Conference Tournament appearances, including a 20-7 season in 2008-09 that saw the Choctaws reach the ASC Championship Game.

His coaching career also includes a successful stint as the head coach at Hernando High School from 2004-08, where he compiled a 75-41 overall record. He led Hernando to a Region 2-4A Championship in 2007-08 and was named Region 2-4A Coach of the Year in 2006-07. Brooks also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Belhaven from 2002-04, where he was the recruiting coordinator and helped develop scouting reports.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Brooks played four years of intercollegiate basketball at Mississippi College before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He later earned a Master’s degree from Belhaven.
