Kansas Head Basketball Coach Bill Self hospitalized after ‘concerning symptoms’

Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self was hospitalized after experiencing “concerning” symptoms and underwent a procedure to have two stents inserted. According to the university, the procedure was successful, and Self is in good spirits with a full recovery expected. Here is the statement that the school released:

“Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday. He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”

This marks the second time Self has faced heart-related issues in recent years. In 2023, he missed both the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments due to chest tightness and balance concerns, which also required a heart catheterization and stent placement. Now 62, Self has led Kansas since 2003, winning two national championships and making four Final Four appearances. He guided the Jayhawks to a record 14 straight Big 12 titles (2004–18) and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.
