Burgette resigns as Head Basketball Coach at Kansas City CC

Brandon Burgette, who revitalized the men’s basketball program at Kansas City Kansas Community College, has accepted an assistant coaching position at an NCAA Division I program (which is believed to be at UMKC).

Burgette, who was named head coach at KCKCC in 2019, recently completed his seventh season leading the Blue Devils and his 14th overall season in the coaching ranks.

In 2024-25, Burgette guided KCKCC to one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Blue Devils won 26 games, captured the 2025 NJCAA Division II Region VI Championship and earned the program’s first-ever victory at the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament, defeating Raritan Valley 88-82 on March 27, 2025.

“I want to sincerely thank Coach Burgette for his leadership, dedication and the energy he brought to our program every single day,” KCKCC Director of Athletics Greg McVey said. “His commitment to developing our student-athletes both on the court and in the classroom has had a lasting impact on our team and our college. We are grateful for the passion and professionalism he brought to Blue Devil basketball and wish him all the best as he transitions to the NCAA Division I level.”

As a first-year head coach in 2019-20, Burgette led KCKCC to its first regular-season conference championship and Region VI title, earning Region VI and KJCCC Coach of the Year honors. The Blue Devils finished 18-13 before the national tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite shortened seasons in 2020-21 and 2021-22, Burgette continued to build momentum within the program. In his third season, KCKCC posted a 20-10 record and tied for second in the KJCCC standings.

Before taking over the Blue Devils, Burgette served nine years as an assistant coach, including three seasons at Johnson County Community College under Hall of Famer Mike Jeffers. During that time, the Cavaliers compiled a 97-33 record, won two region and conference championships and finished as the 2019 NJCAA national runner-up.

He also spent four seasons at Indian Hills Community College, where the program went 121-16, captured four conference and regional titles and finished as the 2014 NJCAA national runner-up. During his tenure there, Burgette helped recruit and coach 54 NCAA Division I and II student-athletes.

A Kansas City native and graduate of Lee’s Summit North High School, Burgette played collegiately at Southwest Baptist University, where he was part of back-to-back MIAA Conference championship teams in 2008 and 2009.

KCKCC Athletics extends its sincere gratitude to Burgette for his leadership, commitment and impact on the men’s basketball program and the campus community and wishes him continued success at the next level.
