NAIA NEWS: Welty departs Southeastern; Named Head Basketball Coach at MidAmerica Nazarene

MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) Director of Athletics Ryan Thompson has officially named Hudson Welty as the head coach of the Pioneer men’s basketball program. Welty returns to his alma mater after previously serving as both a player and assistant coach.

Welty played for former head coach Rocky Lamar from 2014-18 before returning to Olathe as the Pioneers’ lead assistant coach from 2022-24 under previous head coach Adam Hepker. During Welty’s two seasons on staff, MNU compiled a 45-16 record and earned consecutive appearances in the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament.

“We are excited to welcome Hudson Welty back to MNU as the leader of our men’s basketball program,” said Thompson. “As an MNU alum, Hudson understands our mission, our culture, and the significance of Pioneer Basketball. He brings a strong commitment to Christ-centered leadership, developing young men, and competing at a championship level. We believe Hudson is the right person to lead this program into its next chapter.”

Welty returns to MNU after spending the previous two seasons as the head coach at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. He guided the Fire to a 39-24 overall record, an appearance in the Sun Conference Tournament championship game, and an NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament berth.

“MidAmerica Nazarene holds a special place in our family’s story, and it’s truly an honor to return home,” said Welty. “I’m incredibly grateful to President Jon North, Vice President Todd Garrett, and Director of Athletics Ryan Thompson for entrusting me with this opportunity. MNU has played a significant role in shaping me as a man and a coach, and I’m excited to invest in the next generation of Pioneer student-athletes. Our family can’t wait to reconnect with the MNU community, and I’m committed to building a program that pursues excellence, develops young men of Christlike character, and competes for championships.”
