Following a pair successful seasons, LSUA head men’s basketball coach Larry Cordaro is rewarding his assistant, naming Casey Apetrei as the Generals associate head coach.

A graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, where he worked with Cordaro on the Lions staff, Apetrei went to Southern University in Baton Rouge as a graduate assistant when the Jaguars went to the NCAA Tournament. He was then named assistant coach at Frank Phillips Junior College, helping that team to its most successful season under its head coach at the time.

After a season there, he teamed back up with Cordaro to help start the Generals program, which has seen unprecedented success in its first two seasons. In those two years, Apetrei has served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He helped bring in the likes of first year sensation Samuel Ouedraogo, starters Darius Johnson and Gilbert Talbot along with the reigning RRAC freshman of the year William Claiborne. He also served as the head coach of the LSUA junior varsity squad, which started play last season.

“Casey does a great job in all aspects of our program, in particular recruiting,” said head coach Larry Cordaro. “I’m very appreciative of the time and energy he gives to our student-athletes, including starting our junior varsity team last season. Casey has a very bright future ahead of him thanks to his passion in basketball and the quality of person he is.”

Under the direction of Cordaro, Apetrei and the rest of the staff, the Generals have gone 52-8 in their first two seasons, including 25-0 inside The Fort, and won at least a share of the RRAC regular season championships in both seasons of play. LSUA also qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament both years, picking up their first win in the tournament this past season.
