Purdue University and head men’s basketball coach Matt Painter have agreed on a three-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season.
“I’m really excited about where we are as a program,” Painter said. “Purdue is a special place with special people, and I’m humbled to be a part of it. There is no place I’d rather be, and I am excited to get the 2016-17 season started.”
“We are thrilled that Matt will continue to lead the Purdue basketball team and carry the program into the next era of Purdue Athletics,” athletics director Morgan Burke said. “He has been at the helm of a very successful run both on the court and in the classroom, and are excited that he has reaffirmed his commitment to his alma mater. His passion and energy for Purdue University is evident, and we are looking forward to the future of Purdue basketball under his watch.”
In 11 seasons at the Purdue helm, Painter has compiled a 238-134 (.640) record with eight NCAA Tournament appearances, a Big Ten regular-season title and a Big Ten Tournament title. The third all-time winningest coach in Purdue history is one of just six coaches in league history to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year three times, joining Gene Keady, Bobby Knight, Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta on the chart.
Over the last 10 seasons, Purdue’s 229 total wins rank fourth in the Big Ten, while the eight tournament berths are the third most in the Big Ten during that timeframe, averaging almost 23 wins a season.
Painter enters the 2016-17 season third on the school’s all-time wins list (238), behind legendary mentors Keady and Ward “Piggy” Lambert. At age 45, Painter already ranks 18th on the all-time Big Ten wins list.
Last year’s squad posted a 26-9 record, finishing the year with the sixth-most victories in school history. The Boilermakers were 1-of-11 schools nationally to be ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll all season long. This year’s Boilermakers are expected to be ranked among the nation’s elite when the preseason polls come out in November.
