HoopDirt.com can confirm that IPFW assistant Mark Downey will become the next head basketball coach at DII Northeastern State (OK). The move will be made official once Downey clears the HR process, which is expected early next week.
Before becoming an assistant at IPFW, Downey had a ton of success as a DII head coach. He led Arkansas Tech, Charleston (WVa.), and West Alabama to NCAA Tournament appearances, and compiled a 155-83 along the way. Downey also spent two seasons as the head coach at Independence CC where he won 50 games in his two years. In his ten seasons as a collegiate head coach, Downey has captured six Coach of the Year awards.
A mid-week press conference is expected.
