Four days after bringing Sean Dixon to Middle Tennessee from UNC Asheville, head men’s basketball coach Nick McDevitt announced Tuesday the addition of a second former Bulldog assistant to the Blue Raider family in new MT assistant Wes Long.
Long joins McDevitt in Murfreesboro after just one season in Asheville, but is no stranger to Murphy Center after facing the Blue Raiders in past seasons as an assistant at both VCU and Chattanooga.
“My wife and I are thrilled to join the Middle Tennessee family and to make Murfreesboro our home,” Long said. “I’ve admired this basketball program from the opposite bench a few times over the past few seasons and know the passion and pride these young men compete with.
“We are excited to join Coach McDevitt again, to pour ourselves into the success of Blue Raider basketball, and are thrilled to be a part of the great tradition that this program represents.”
Long spent two seasons at VCU with now LSU head man Will Wade, joining the Rams with Wade after two seasons together at Chattanooga.
Prior to his time as a Division I assistant, Long spent nine seasons at Division II Queens University in Charlotte where he served as the head coach for the last five campaigns.
Long led the Royals to back-to-back Conference Carolinas regular season titles in 2011 and 2012 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2011. In addition to earning a 75-66 record as a head coach, he also led his student-athletes to five of the seven highest GPAs in program history.
The Mauldin, S.C., native played and coached as an undergraduate at Clemson, joining the Tigers in 2000-01 as a walk-on before moving into a role as a student assistant coach. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Clemson in 2004 before adding a master’s degree in the same field from Queens in 2007.
“We are very fortunate to be adding someone of Coach Long’s experience and expertise here at Middle Tennessee,” McDevitt stated. “He is a proven winner with head coaching experience at the collegiate level and has been successful in every role and at every stop that he has made.”
Long is married to the former Martha Wahlman and the couple have two daughters, Abbie Grace and Emma Hope.
