Successful collegiate coaches Mike Brey (University of Notre Dame), Joe Dooley (East Carolina University), Oliver Drake (Midland University) and Chuck Moore (Richard Bland College) will serve as court coaches at the 2018 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team Training Camp that will take place May 31- June 2 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Brey, Dooley, Drake and Moore, who each will be taking part in their first USA Basketball training camp, will be on hand to assist the USA U18 coaching staff of Bill Self (Kansas), Anthony Grant (Dayton) and Danny Manning (Wake Forest). Training camp is expected to feature 33 athletes overall, and finalists for the team are expected to be announced on June 2.
“These four coaches bring winning traditions and a wealth of experience with them along to the 2018 USA U18 training camp, and the committee is confident they will be a tremendous help to the USA coaching staff and to all of the athletes in attendance,” said Matt Painter (Purdue), chair of the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee.
Brey, the all-time winningest coach in Notre Dame men’s basketball history, recently completed his 18th season (2000-01 to present) as the head men’s basketball coach at Notre Dame, where he has compiled a 403-202 record (.666 winning percentage) and has led his teams to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2015 and 2016 Elite Eight.
This past season in 2017-18, Brey led the Fighting Irish to a 21-15 record and the NIT second round.
Also taking into account his five seasons (1995-96 to 1999-2000) as the head coach at the University of Delaware, during which time he tallied a 99-52 record (.656), Brey owns a career head coaching mark of 502-254 (.664).
“It is an honor to be a part of USA Basketball, which plays such a key role in setting the worldwide standard for our sport,” Brey said. “I’m looking forward to working with the athletes that will be a part of the foundation for basketball in the United States over the next decade and helping out a great coaching staff that has already been assembled.”
Dooley was named as the head men’s basketball coach at East Carolina University on April 4, 2018. Prior to being hired at ECU, Dooley spent five seasons as the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University (2013-14 to 2017-18), where he compiled a 114-58 record (.663) and led his teams to postseason play in all five seasons.
He led FGU to three Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championships, two conference tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2016 and 2017.
FGU won 21 or more games every year season Dooley, and he was named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018 and the NABC District III Coach of the Year in 2017.
Dooley was East Carolina’s head coach for four seasons (1995-96 to 1998-99), where he compiled a record of 57-52, and he has been an assistant coach at ECU (1991-92 to 1994-95), the University of South Carolina (1988-89 to 1990-91), the University of New Mexico (1999-00 to 2001-02), the University of Wyoming (2002-03) and the University of Kansas (2003-04 to 2012-13).
In his nine years as a head coach overall, he owns a career record of 171-110 (.609).
“It’s an honor to be associated with USA Basketball and to be able to work with the talented young men and alongside the coaching staff,” Dooley said. “I feel very privileged to have been asked to be a part of the training camp staff for USA Basketball this summer.
“I hope to help put the team in a position to be very successful.”
Drake recently completed his third season (2015-16 to present) as the men’s basketball coach at Midland, where he has compiled a 53-38 record (.582).
His 2017-18 squad finished 16-14, while in 2016-17, Midland went 21-10 and earned an at-large bid to the NAIA DII National Championship Tournament.
Including five seasons (2010-11 to 2014-15) as the head men’s basketball coach at Ashford University in Iowa, where he directed teams to three NAIA DII National Championship Tournament appearances, Drake owns a career coaching record of 161-93 (.634) over eight seasons.
“I am extremely thankful and honored to have the opportunity to represent USA Basketball at the U18 training camp,” Drake said. “To be a part of USA Basketball and to represent this amazing country with this group of coaches and athletes is a dream come true.
“I am really excited to get to camp and learn from coach Self, coach Manning, coach Grant and all those involved while helping prepare the U18 players in any way I can,” Drake added. “I look forward to bringing passion and energy to all practices and meetings while doing whatever is needed from coach Self and his staff.”
Moore in five seasons (2013-14 to 2017-18) as the men’s basketball coach at Richard Bland College in Virginia compiled a 126-42 record (.750), recorded two 30+ win seasons, won the 2015 NJCAA Division II National Championship and reached the 2017 NJCAA Division II Final Four.
Moore has been honored as the 2015 NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year, the 2015 NJCAA Division II District 6 Coach of the Year, the 2015 NABC Junior College Coach of the Year and as the 2017 and 2018 NJCAA Division II District 15 Coach of the Year.
“It is an unbelievable honor to be selected as a court coach for the USA Men’s U18 National Team Training Camp,” Moore said. “This opportunity will definitely be one of the highlights of my coaching career. I look forward to working with an elite coaching staff and some of the most talented players in the USA, and I will bring energy, passion and knowledge to every drill and practice. My intensity and love for the game will hopefully be apparent to everyone involved in the camp.”
