Following up on HoopDirt.com’s NAIA DIRT from yesterday…

The Wilberforce University Athletic Department has announced that Mark Mitchell has been hired as the school’s next head men’s basketball coach. Wilberforce Athletic Director Derek Williams states that an influx of resumes were received for the position. “Mark Mitchell’s goal to always mold tomorrow’s leaders and prepare them to be successful in the classroom, in the game of life and make a positive impact in our community stood out”, “Mark has a passion to teach, mold, guide and develop. Whether it is in the classroom or on the basketball court” stated Williams.

Mark Mitchell leaves Taft High School after returning their for a second time last year, he has been an assistant coach at Ohio State University where he was apart of a program that went 109-33 in four years, while appearing in four NCAA tournaments, twice advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. His daughter Kelsey Mitchell was the 2nd pick overall in the 2018 WNBA draft after a stellar career at Ohio State.

Prior to Ohio State Mitchell had been the Head Coach at Taft High School for 11 seasons where he led the program to a stellar 221-50 record, won eight Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference titles, four district crowns and, in 2011, won the Ohio Division III state title after going 25-1. At Taft, he inherited a program that had previously produced 10 straight losing seasons, he promptly guided them to a 22-3 record  in his first season.

We are excited to have Mark become apart of the Wilberforce Family. We believe our student-athletes will excel under his guidance first and formost in the classroom then on the court.
