Barstow College has announced the appointment of Amaurys Fermin as the new Vikings Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
Early in his playing career, Fermin competed at the High School level at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx, NY. Fermin was a New York City Champion in 2005 and named First Team All City and First Team All State. Fermin began his college career at the Junior College level at Missouri State West Plains and Hagerstown Community College. After two successful seasons at the Junior College level, He earned a full scholarship and went on to play Division I basketball at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in the Big West Conference. In 2012, Fermin graduated with his bachelor’s degree in History from the University.
During his senior season at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he led the Big West Conference with 119 assists, was the team’s second leading scorer and helped the Mustangs reach the program’s second-highest victory total with 18 Division I wins.
Fermin comes to us directly from Allan Hancock College where he was the Associate Head Coach for the Men’s Basketball Program. Fermin had a major impact for the Bulldogs program this previous season. He served as a vital part of the Bulldogs offensive and defensive strategy, while being a primary contributor to scouting and game-planning. Fermin was integral in player development and student success within the program. This included monitoring study hall, practice planning, scouting and film sessions to improve skills, decision making and efficiency. The Hancock Bulldogs finished the season with an overall 24-7 record, held a 16 game winning streak and a 3.4 team GPA. Prior to Hancock College, he was the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Porterville College spending two seasons at the helm of the Porterville College men’s basketball program. Fermin led the Pirates to two consecutive 3C2A playoff appearances while accruing an overall record of 37-21 during his tenure and a 3.3 team GPA.
Additionally, Fermin has had success at the professional level. As a professional athlete, he was a member of the Dominican Republic National Team playing alongside NBA players Al Horford (Boston Celtics) Karl Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Francisco Garcia (Sacramento Kings). In 2012, the team brought home the CentroBasket Championship, earning a Gold Medal for the Dominican Republic. Fermin has also played professional ball for teams in Cyprus, Greece, Finland, Puerto Rico & Dominican Republic.
In 2016, Fermin developed a 501c3 non profit program named 6th Man Basketball Academy. The idea came from Fermin’s playing experience and passion for helping young student/athletes ages 8-18. A passion he brings to the development of student-athletes, on and off the court, at Barstow College. The 6th Man Basketball program’s mission was to mentor young student/athletes with skill development and help guide them with the transition of high school to collegiate athletics.
Fermin is also a member of the CCCMBCA (California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaching Association) & the LABC (Latino Association of Basketball Coaches) Additionally, he served as the West Coast Elite UAA Central Region Program Director and worked with the Nike
EYBL Oakland/Sacramento Soldiers. Fermin earned his Masters Degree in Exercise Science from Pennsylvania Western University, California.
