As the fall season looms just around the corner, Academy of Art men’s basketball head coach Julius Barnes has announced the addition of Anthony Lorenzo to his coaching staff.
The new assistant coach joins the Urban Knights after stepping across town from University of San Francisco where he served as Video Coordinator for the Don’s men’s basketball team during the 2016-17 season. Prior to working at USF, Lorenzo spent two years coaching NCAA Division III men’s basketball with stays at Centenary College and Rutgers University-Newark. During that time, he helped coach his teams to two winning seasons including a 20-8 record with the Scarlet Raiders (2015-16) and a 15-13 record with the Cyclones (2014-15).
“I am excited to have Anthony Lorenzo as a new member of the staff and believe that he will be a valuable asset to our program,” said Barnes. “He brings tremendous work ethic and is very knowledgeable about the game of basketball. His prior coaching experience at the Division III level and recent role at University of San Francisco make him a great fit. I look forward to his contributions, both on and off the court.”
While growing up in Piscataway, N.J., Lorenzo was a two-sport athlete, competing on varsity for two years in both basketball and football at Bishop Ahr High School. After graduating, he headed to Rutgers University-New Brunswick and spent two years as the Head Student Manager for the women’s basketball team under Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer. Also while in college, Lorenzo spent time as a coach for the Hoop Group Elite and Hoop Nation AAU and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies, Sport Management.
“I’m extremely excited to be here at the Academy of Art,” said Lorenzo. “I’m thankful of Coach Barnes for providing me the opportunity to coach basketball in one of the most eclectic cities in the country. The opportunity to learn from and grow under a coach who has had much success in the Bay Area, is second to none. I look forward to preparing and developing our student-athletes here at the Academy of Art not only on the basketball court, but for life after as well.”
