The George Washington men’s basketball program proudly welcomed today Eric Atkins as an assistant coach on Head Coach Jamion Christian‘s staff.
“I’m super excited about joining the GW program,” said Coach Atkins. “It’s an honor to be at a school with such a rich basketball tradition, and I’m looking forward to connecting and assisting our staff and student-athletes as we become a top program in the Atlantic 10.”
Atkins is no stranger to the District as he comes over from Howard, where he previously coached the MEAC’s all-time leading scorer in Charles Williams, last season’s MEAC Rookie of the Year Wayne Bristol, Jr. and top-20 five-star recruit Makur Maker.
“With the collection of guards we have within our program, and that we have committed to us, we are very excited to have someone with Eric’s ability join our staff,” proclaimed Christian. “I had the opportunity to watch Eric when he was playing early in high school, and I was always so impressed with his demeanor and how he consistently found a way to lead his teams into the winning category. We are always trying to find ways to improve our program, and the best way to do that is with humble and hungry people. Eric is exactly that. I’m excited to welcome him to Foggy Bottom!”
Prior to his tenure at Howard, Atkins served as video coordinator at his alma mater, Notre Dame. A 2014 graduate, the three-time captain and All-ACC selection was one of the most prolific point guards in Fighting Irish history. He concluded his career as just the fifth Notre Dame men’s basketball player ever to score 1,000+ points and record 500+ assists. Atkins appeared in 133 contests (tied for second all-time at Notre Dame) and started 105. In 2013-14, he was a Third-Team All-ACC selection by the league’s coaches after averaging 13.0 ppg and 4.0 apg. Atkins later played professionally in Greece, with the Erie Bay Hawks in the NBA D-League and also spent time on the NBA’s Utah Jazz roster.
Atkins strengthens GW’s recruiting ties in the DMV after playing his prep career at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Md., where he was a two-time Baltimore Catholic League MVP.
