Bemidji State Staff Update

The Bemidji State University men’s basketball program made two changes to its coaching staff head coach Mike Boschee announced. The Beavers brought on former Saint Mary’s University men’s basketball assistant coach Blake Peterson to the same position and promoted third year coach Matt Majkrzak to top assistant.

“We are excited to add Blake to the coaching staff. He has had some quality experiences already at a young age including coaching as a student assistant, a top assistant and with Minnesota AAU basketball,” Boschee said. “His primary duties at BSU will be to help ensuring player academic success, skill work with the guards, scouting of opponents and recruiting Minnesota and some of the surrounding states.  He will bring a new perspective to the program which I always enjoy.”

Peterson, a Coon Rapids, Minn., native, comes to Bemidji State after serving as assistant men’s basketball coach at Saint Mary’s for one year. He was responsible for game and practice preparation, recruiting throughout the Midwest and academic success supervision. The Cardinals Men’s Basketball program recorded its most successful season over the past 20 years during Peterson’s lone year with the team.

Prior to his time at SMU, Peterson coached three years at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member Minnesota State University, Mankato as a volunteer assistant. The Mavericks posted an 82-18 recorded during Peterson’s time with the program and qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament each season. Peterson also spent time working with Minnesota AAU basketball leagues as a coach for 17U and 15U-16U teams. He graduated from Minnesota State with a degree in communication studies.

Majkrzak will fill the top assistant coach position vacated by former BSU assistant Ryan Montgomery, who accepted the position of head men’s basketball coach at Valley City State University. Majkrzak first joined the Beavers in 2014 and works in all phases of the program with focus on recruiting, individual player development, game preparation, assist the strength and conditioning coach, team travel, academic progress, camp organization and instruction, and community engagement. He is an Elkhart Lake, Wis., native and earned a bachelor’s degree in business management at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2012 and a master’s degree in organizational management with an emphasis in sports at Chadron State College in 2014.
