Dave Wojcik, San José State University’s men’s basketball head coach the last four seasons, submitted his resignation for personal reasons effective immediately. Marie Tuite, the Spartans director of athletics, accepted Wojcik’s resignation.

“This past year has been emotionally challenging for me with the loss of my father. His passing made me evaluate what is important in life and the value of family. With the considerable needs of my widowed mother as well as my son moving to the East Coast after his high school graduation, I believe it is the appropriate time to resign my position as head men’s basketball coach at San José University,” said Wojcik.

The Spartans had an overall win-loss record of 32-90 with Wojcik as head coach. The 2016-17 team was San José State’s most successful in six years posting a 14-16 record and tying for eighth place in Mountain West conference play with a 7-11 mark. Wojcik came to San José State after 20 seasons as an assistant coach at eight NCAA Division I institutions.

“The opportunity to lead the men’s basketball team has been a privilege. I am proud to leave the program positioned for continued success and wish the program and San José State University all the best,” the former coach added.

“Earlier today, Dave Wojcik resigned his position as head men’s basketball coach. On behalf of our entire department, I want to wish Dave and his family the very best as they begin a new chapter,” said Tuite.

“We will immediately start the process of conducting a national search to find a replacement for Coach Wojcik.”

Tuite announced assistant coach Rodney Tention will serve as the team’s interim head coach until the next head coach is appointed.
