Elizabeth City State University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Shawn Walker has added Marque Carrington to the coaching staff.

Coach Carrington brings 19 years of coaching experience to the Vikings Men’s Basketball program, along with a lifetime of knowledge of the game.

Most recently, Carrington completed his third season as Men’s Basketball Head Coach at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School in Raleigh, NC (2018-2021). Coach Carrington revived the basketball program and turned them into one of the top defensive teams in the triangle area. This past season, the program finished the season with a 61.5 % winning percentage in one of the toughest conferences in North Carolina. This winning percentage rivals the great 2010 – 2011 Southeast team. He also dedicated his time as Assistant Coach for the Garner Road Basketball Club (2022 3SSB Graves 17U). Carrington is USA Basketball Gold Coach Licensed.

In 2016, Coach Carrington returned to his Alma Mater, North Carolina A&T University, as an Assistant Coach for the Aggies Men’s Basketball team. Carrington served as Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach for two seasons at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC (2014-2016).

He was the Men’s Varsity Head Coach at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, NC (2008-2014), where he also started his career as Men’s Junior Varsity Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach (2002-2008). A highlight of his time at Cardinal Gibbons was when his team won the 2010-2011 Conference Championship, and subsequently, he was honored as Carolina 6 Conference Coach of the Year. Carrington is a huge advocate for student-athletes achieving academic success, which was reflected in his 2013-2014 team being recognized with the NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award for the overall highest team GPA in North Carolina. In addition, during his tenure as Head Coach, his teams averaged thirteen players per season on the Academic All-Conference Team.

Early in his career, Carrington worked with the Raleigh Knights World Basketball Association and as Head Coach for the Garner Road AAU Men’s 17 & Under team, which was runner-up in the 2003 State Championship.

Carrington has also done much to support local charities and organizations through KTS Basketball, founded in 2011. KTS Basketball Coaches’ Clinics feature guest speakers from the NBA, ESPN, collegiate coaches, and widely respected AAU and high school coaches. In addition, the KTS Basketball “Bridging the Gap” series was designed to foster working relationships between prominent NC AAU Coaches, High School Coaches, and Skill Trainers.

For 20 years, he has played an integral part in leading and assisting with youth basketball camps in North Carolina, basketball camps at local universities, and high school basketball talent evaluator Bob Gibbons for his evaluation clinics.

Carrington was a four-year starter and scholarship player for the North Carolina A&T University Basketball team in Greensboro, NC, where he majored in Physical Education with a minor in Sociology. He is ranked in the Top 10 All-Time Steals and Top 10 All-Time Assists for the Aggies. In addition, he distinguished himself as an outstanding basketball player for Cary High School, where he was one of the key leaders on the 1995 NCHSAA 4-A Boys’ Basketball State Championship team as a junior.

Carrington was McDonalds All American Honorable Mention. In 2011, he was inducted into the Cary High School Hall of Fame. Following high school, Carrington attended Hargrave Military Academy, where he was a member of their highly successful postgraduate basketball program.

Marque Carrington is married to wife, Dawn, with whom he has three children.
