Catawba Valley Community College adds Matt Grantham to Men’s Basketball Staff

Catawba Valley Community College men’s basketball coach Bryan Garmroth has announced the addition of Matt Grantham to his coaching staff.

Grantham comes to the Red Hawks after spending the past three seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach at North Carolina Wesleyan University.

“We are very excited to have Matt join us at CVCC,” Garmroth said. “He is a young and very enthusiastic coach. His work ethic and energy level are second to none, and he will be a huge asset to our program. He has worked the last two years for John Thompson at North Carolina Wesleyan. Coach Thompson is a great coach and highly respected across the country.”

During two years at North Carolina Wesleyan, Grantham helped lead the Battling Bishops to a 2017-18 East Division regular-season championship. He also assisted four players in earning all-conference honors and one athlete in earning conference Rookie of the Year accolades during those two seasons.

Most importantly, every senior during Grantham’s tenure at Wesleyan graduated on time, and 10 players earned academic all-conference honors.

A graduate of East Carolina University, Grantham comes from a coaching tradition-rich family. HIs father Greg, who helped found the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA), has been a long-time basketball coach at White Oak High School in Jacksonville.

“Matt’s father Greg Grantham is a retired and highly successful North Carolina high school basketball coach,” Garmroth said. “Matt not only brings a lot of basketball knowledge, but he is a recruiting warrior. In his two years at North Carolina Wesleyan, he has developed a lot of recruiting relationships. We are very fortunate to have him at CVCC.”

Matt was a team manager for the East Carolina University men’s basketball program while pursuing his undergraduate studies, including a major in Psychology and minor in business management.

Grantham also has experience working with major college basketball camps, including at the University of North Carolina, Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of Maryland.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to join coach Garmroth’s staff at Catawba Valley,” Grantham said. “He is a proven veteran that has coached at every level of college basketball. I look forward to learning all I can from him, as well as applying my own knowledge and experience to help our program compete at a championship level.”
