D2 DIRT: Fort Valley State opens

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

I have heard from multiple sources that Mark Sherrill is no longer the head men’s basketball coach at D2 Fort Valley State University (SIAC). As further confirmation, Sherrill has been removed from the roster, and the dreaded 404 error comes up when you try to access his bio from a search.

Sherrill took over at FVSU back in 2018. In his three+ seasons at the helm, the Wildcats went 15-56 (.211), including a 1-9 mark so far this year. Prior to his time at FVSU, Sherrill spent over 20 years as an assistant at his alma mater Johnson C. Smith University, where is is also the all-time leading scorer (2,552 points).

It sounds like assistant coach Jaylon McMillan will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

FVSU becomes the second small college to open in the past week, as NAIA Langston University also had a mid-season coaching change.
