Augustana College (IL) will name Bendictine Mesa University (AZ) head coach Steve Schafer as their new men’s basketball coach. This was first reported by Bob Quillman earlier today, and I can now 100% confirm it. Schafer was offered the job yesterday, and accepted it this morning.

Schafer, a 2001 Augustana alum, has been the AD and head coach at NAIA BenU Mesa since 2014. Prior to his time with the Redhawks, Schafer spent three seasons as the head coach at Fontbonne University (MO). He has also been an assistant at Benedictine University (IL) (2009-11), North Park University (2004-2009), Wayne State College (2001-2004).

He will replace Grey Giovanine who retired after 21-seasons back in May.

An official announcement is expected as early as tomorrow.
