I have confirmed through multiple sources that D3 Augustana College (IL) head men’s basketball coach Steve Schafer has resigned. An official announcement is expected shortly.

Schafer, an Augustana alum, had just completed his first season at the Vikings helm. He led his squad to a 7-5 (6-4) record during the COVID shortened season. The Vikings posting a winning record in the league for the 21st consecutive season, and advanced to the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament.

Before returning to his alma mater, Schafer had served as the head coach at Benedictine University Mesa (AZ), where he started the men’s basketball program back in 2014. He also worked as the head coach at Fontbonne University (MO).

Word on the street is that Schafer will be returning to Arizona where he will enter the private sector.
