D3 Northland College names Hickey as new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

Northland College Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scott Sorenson announced the addition of Kevin Hickey to the LumberJack coaching staff on Thursday.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Kevin join our staff,” said Sorenson. “He has a tremendous amount of experience in just about every aspect of a college basketball program. His basketball IQ is fantastic. I could tell from our very first conversation that he not only knew his stuff, but his passion for coaching and teaching will be a great asset for our program, our student-athletes and our institution. He came as highly recommended from some outstanding coaches as anyone I’ve ever hired, including some mutual coaching friends that we share.”

Hickey, a Plymouth, Michigan native, spent last season as an assistant coach at Concordia University-Ann Arbor, an NAIA program in Michigan. During the 2020-2021 season, Hickey served as a student-manager with NCAA Division I member Eastern Michigan University. Prior to his time at EMU, Hickey worked on the coaching staff at Canton High School in Canton, Michigan for 6 years.

“Kevin Hickey is a coach I greatly admire,” said former Eastern Michigan University Assistant Coach Kevin Mondro. “He’s a hard worker, very loyal and has a strong basketball mind. His passion is helping young people grow. I could not be happier for Kevin and I’m super excited for him to get to work with Coach Sorenson and his wonderful program.”

Before arriving at Canton High School, Hickey served in multiple capacities at NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University, including serving as a student-manager before being elevated to Video Coordinator.

“I want to thank Coach Sorenson, Athletic Director Seamus Gregory, President Solibakke and Chief Business Officer Sherri Venero for the opportunity to be a part of the LumberJack Basketball Program,” said Hickey. “My journey to get to this point has been unique to be sure, but I’m as excited as I’ve ever been to join a program and ready to do whatever is needed to help us succeed on and off the court.”
