Daily Dirt – 3/13/19

Obviously a very busy week so far. Here’s a quick update – more later…

I tweeted on Monday that the over/under on DI coaching changes was 11 for the week. The firing of Saul Phillips earlier this morning moves the number so far to 7. Thursday and Friday will be busy – I’ll take the over at this point (keep and eye on the Big Sky and the WAC….)

With Billy Kennedy out at Texas A&M, the Buzz Williams rumors are going to be interesting to follow. The Texas native was an assistant for the Aggies from 2004-06 under Billy Gillispie. Williams’ contract at Tech runs through the 2022-23 season, and if he leaves after this season, his buy out according to his original contract would be $500,000.

I have heard that Memphis associate head coach Sam Mitchell is sniffing around at Mercer. The long-time NBA player and coach is a 1985 Mercer alum, who graduated as the all-time leading scorer in school history. He joined Penny Hardaway’s staff last spring.

I have now heard from multiple sources that Jake Deer has been hired as the head basketball coach at NAIA Point University (GA). Deer had spent the past four seasons as the associate head coach at UT Tyler. He replaces Daryl Slack who was released in February. Rodney Mayes who led the Skyhawks in the interim, will remain on the staff as an assistant coach.

Kenneth Johnson is no longer the head coach at Penn State Fayette. He had been there for the past two seasons where he went 22-29.

My Search firm update from yesterday is HERE in case you missed it.
