It’s been a crazy start to the week (and we’re continuing to dig out of a blizzard here in Boston). Here are some things that I’ve heard…
- Still waiting for the official announcement on the firing of Marty Simmons at Evansville. In the meantime, the hot name making the rounds there is former Indiana standout Calbert Cheaney. The Evansville native was the 6th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, and spent 13 years in the league. He has worked at the college level at both Indiana and Saint Louis. **UPDATE: official statement on Simmons firing HERE**
- Search firm updates…Eddie Fogler has the search at Pitt while DHR’s Glenn Sugiyama is running the Utah State search. I’ve also heard that Parker has Loyola (MD).
- Apparently Tubby Smith will meet with Memphis officials today, after a meeting scheduled for yesterday was postponed. Obviously a ton of speculation surrounding this one (Penny Hardaway), but sounds like there will some clarification later today. **UPDATE: Tubby has been fired. More HERE**
- Also, still waiting on Thad Matta’s decision at Georgia. Multiple sources have reported that he’s been offered the Bulldogs job and was given 24-hours to decide. Time is just about up…
- I’ve heard that Jase Herl, who took over as the second interim head coach at Colorado State after Larry Eustachy and Steve Barnes were suspended, is a name to keep an eye on at DII Missouri Western. Before joining the CSU staff two seasons ago, Herl was the head coach at Northwest Kansas Technical College.
- A few names that I’ve heard swirling around the DII Tusculum College (TN) job are Maryville (TN) associate head coach Raul Placeres, and Lincoln Memorial (TN) assistant coach Omar Wattad.
- I can confirm that Neal Sherbeyn is no longer the head coach at Eastern Wyoming College. He had been the head coach at the school for the past two seasons where he compiled a 5-53 record. HoopDirt.com expects to have the job posting shortly. **UPDATE: As promised…official job posting HERE**
- In case you missed it from yesterday, here’s a search update from eastern Kentucky: EKU DIRT.
