Still recovering after a crazy day yesterday (RECAP). A few things to kick today off…
- South Dakota State head coach T.J. Otzelberger is gaining momentum at UNLV. He’s has three very successful seasons with the Jackrabbits, going 70-33 with two Summit League Championships. Fogler is running this search.
- VERY early names at BYU: Mark Pope (Head Coach Utah Valley – former BYU assistant), Mark Madsen (assistant coach – LA Lakers), and DeMarlo Slocum (assistant coach – Utah). More here soon.
- Early hot name at Arkansas is obviously Kelvin Sampson. Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek hired Sampson at Houston, so the connection is obvious. Keep and eye on Tulsa’s Frank Haith here as well. Really, really early though…
- I’ve heard from multiple sources that the core group at Appalachian State is Gardner-Webb’s Tim Craft, Campbell’s Kevin McGeehan, Radford’s Mike Jones, Presbyterians Dustin Kerns, and and former Charlotte head coach Bobby Lutz. This one could be wrapped up soon.
- Speaking Jones, heard he’s also involved at Elon. I’ve also heard Ohio State assistant Mike Schrage mentioned here.
- I can confirm that new George Washington head coach Jamion Christian will retain Director of Basketball Operations Austin Kelley. Last season was Kelley’s first at GW after working with the Hoop Group. It also sounds like former Maryland staffer and current South Alabama assistant Nima Omidvar will be added to the new GW staff.
- I’ve now heard from multiple sources that current Ranger College head coach Billy Gillispie is involved with the opening at DII Midwestern State (TX). Gillispie, the former head coach at Kentucky, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UTEP, led Ranger to NJCAA DI National Championship game last week.
- Interviews have been scheduled at DII Academy of Art University (CA). The names that I’ve heard so far are Dominican U associate head coach Scott Waterman, former Cal State San Bernardino head coach Jeff Oliver, former College of Marin head coach Dave Granucci, Santa Margarita Catholic HS head coach Jeff Reinert (former HC at Utah Valley, and assistant at Fresno State and Oregon State) and current ART U assistant Anthony Lorenzo. There are also at least two current DII head coaches involved, and possibly 1 DI assistant.
