Daily Dirt – 3/29/16

Here are some things that I’ve heard…

  • On Sunday, I mentioned Columbia head coach Kyle Smith and his involvement at San Francisco (Daily Dirt – Easter Edition).  Smith’s name is now on fire there, and KPIX-TV’s Dennis O’Donnel has gone as far as tweeting that Smith is expected to be named the head coach at USF as early as Thursday.  More on this when I can confirm it.
  • An interesting name has surfaced at Wright State…from multiple sources, I’ve heard South Dakota State’s Scott Nagy mentioned here.  Nagy has been at SDSU for the past 21 seasons where he has won 410 games, including 26 wins the Summit League Championship this past season.  One of the reasons Wright State AD Bob Grant said Billy Donlon was dismissed was due to his lack of NCAA tournament appearances – Nagy doesn’t have that problem, he’s been to three in the past five seasons.  I’ll keep an eye on this one.
  • I have heard that NJCAA DII Fayetteville Tech will hire Central Carolina CC associate head coach Brian Hurd as the inaugural head coach for the program.  Hurd has been at CCCC for the past seven seasons.  Fayetteville Tech will start competition during the 2016-17 season.  An official announcement is expected soon.
  • It sounds like NAIA DII Point University (GA) head coach Alan Wilson will be retiring.  He just wrapped up his 10th season as the men’s basketball coach at the school – he began his tenure at Point as the women’s basketball coach back in 1996.  I have heard that he will stay on as the athletic director.
