Evans Resigns at Central Oklahoma

Terry Evans has resigned his position as head men’s basketball coach at Central Oklahoma after 13 years of record-setting success.

Evans came to UCO in 2002 and finished with a 263-124 career record, becoming the winningest coach in program history late in a 20-10 campaign this season. He led the Bronchos to eight 20-win seasons and seven NCAA Division II tournament appearances, advancing to the Elite Eight twice.

“After lots of prayer and several conversations with my family, I have decided to resign my coaching position at the University of Central Oklahoma,” said Evans, who is pursuing other coaching opportunities. “My family and I had an unbelievable experience at UCO for the last 13 years.

“I’m really proud of our current and past coaches and players. Also a special thanks to all of our fans and supporters who have meant so much to us. I would also like to thank our administration and the education faculty.”

Evans was a standout player at Millwood High School and then the University of Oklahoma before embarking on his coaching career.

He was an assistant coach at Texas Christian and Edmond Santa Fe High School before serving one year as head coach at Chickasha High School. Evans took over at Midwest City High School in 1997 and went 100-11 while winning three Class 6A state championships in a four-year tenure with the Bombers.

Evans returned to OU as director of basketball operations for the 2001-02 season when the Sooners advanced to the Final Four and then took over at UCO the following year.

The Bronchos captured five Lone Star Conference North Division championships, won 20-plus games eight times and qualified for the Division II national tournament seven times under Evans’ guidance. He has the two winningest seasons in school history – 30-4 in 2010-11 and 28-6 in 2007-08 – when the Bronchos won regional titles in advancing to the Elite Eight.

A national search for Evans’ replacement will begin immediately.
