Jermaine Henderson Named Assistant at Cleveland State

Jermaine Henderson, a highly-regarded assistant coach with almost 20 years of experience on the sideline, has been named an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program at Cleveland State.

Head coach Gary Waters made the announcement on Thursday.

“With the addition of Jermaine Henderson, I believe that we have assembled one of the best staffs in the entire country,” Waters said. “His experience and winning pedigree will enhance what we are doing at Cleveland State, which is getting to the next level. I believe we are on the verge of breaking through and in order to do that, we need quality coaches teaching and developing our kids. I am ecstatic to have Jermaine join our program.”

Henderson joins the Vikings after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Missouri State where he helped the program to a CollegeInsider.com Tournament bid in 2014. In addition, he helped mentor four players who earned selections to All-Missouri Valley Conference teams, including Marcus Marshall who was the MVC Freshman of the Year in 2012-13.

Prior to arriving at MSU, Henderson was a mainstay of the Miami (Ohio) men’s basketball program for 19 years, including 15 seasons as an assistant with the RedHawks after a standout four-year playing career.

Henderson began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant for Charlie Coles in 1997-98 and moved into a full-time assistant coach role the following season. In 2005, Henderson was promoted to associate head coach.

During his tenure as a player and coach at Miami (Ohio), Henderson helped the RedHawks to 329 wins.

He was part of 10 postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournaments (1995, 1997, 1999, 2007) and a Sweet 16 apperance in 1999. In addition, Miami (Ohio) played in the NIT four times (1994, 1996, 2005, 2006) and the CBI in 2008 and 2011. He helped the RedHawks to four conference titles and two MAC Tournament championships.

During his tenure at Miami (Ohio), Henderson helped tutor 33 All-MAC selections, including 11 first team picks and two MAC Players of the Year. He also went 3-3 as the interim head coach during brief stints in 2007-08 and 2011-12, while the late Charlie Coles tended to health issues.

A senior on Coles’ first Miami (Ohio) team in 1996-97, Henderson helped that squad advance to the NCAA tournament after winning the MAC championship. He averaged 8.3 points and 3.4 rebounds as a co-captain of the team.

A two-time recipient of the Jamie Mercurio Award, which is presented annually to the Miami (Ohio) player who best demonstrates courage and perseverance, Henderson made 86 career three-pointers, ranking eighth in school history when his career ended.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Henderson was a standout at Columbus East H.S., averaging 22.4 points, 9.6 rebounds and 8.1 assists as a senior. A two-time all-conference, all-city, all-district and all-state selection, Henderson earned Street & Smith’s All-American honors his final two seasons.
