New University of Delaware men’s basketball head coach Martin Ingelsby added another key piece to his staff Wednesday as he announced that former Notre Dame teammate Torrian Jones has joined the Blue Hens as an assistant coach.
Ingelsby, who was hired back on May 25, began building his staff last month with the addition of assistant coaches Bill Phillips and Corey McCrae and director of basketball operations Pat Rogers.
A former standout for the Irish, Jones brings a unique skill set to UD that includes experience in several facets of the game, including coaching, academic support and counseling, and broadcasting.
“I am very excited about the addition of Torrian to our basketball staff,” Ingelsby said. “His knowledge of the game and his experience working with student-athletes fit perfectly with our philosophy here at Delaware. He will bring a new level of energy to our program and I am confident he will help develop our players both on and off the court.”
Jones comes to Newark after spending the last two years as an academic counselor in the University of Notre Dame academic services for student-athletes department where he provided academic support and counseling for multiple Irish teams. He also served as the color commentator for Notre Dame men’s basketball broadcasts during each of the last two years.
“I am very honored and excited for the opportunity to work at a terrific institution such as the University of Delaware,” Jones stated. “I feel that given the location, conference and facilities, it will be a perfect situation to build a program. Also, and maybe most importantly, I truly believe in the staff Martin has put together. Our blend of personalities and experiences will show in the identity of our team and the direction of our program.”
Jones served two years as an assistant coach at Pennsbury (Pa.) High School, his alma mater, during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, prior to serving as head assistant coach at Bryn Athyn (Pa.) College in the 2013-14 campaign. He also was a skills coach at the Jones Basketball Academy in Fairless Hills, Pa. from 2006-08.
Jones was a four-year member of the Irish men’s basketball team from 2000-04, averaging 4.6 points per game while appearing in 123 contests during his career. He played with Ingelsby in 2000-01 during his freshman campaign, and served as a team captain during his final two years.
A graduate of the Notre Dame Mendoza School of Business in 2004, Jones, continued his playing career with the West Chester Wildfire of the USBL, the Florida Flame of the NBA Development League, and the Albany Patroons of the USBL from 2005-06.
