Itawamba Community College has made a major move for its men’s basketball program, naming veteran college coach Rod Barnes as the Indians’ new head coach.
Barnes brings decades of NCAA experience to Fulton, including head coaching stops at Ole Miss, Georgia State and Cal State Bakersfield. A Mississippi native and former Ole Miss standout, Barnes has built a career around player development, program building and postseason success at the highest levels of college basketball.
“This is an exciting day for ICC and our men’s basketball program,” ICC President Dr. Jay Allen said. “Coach Barnes is a proven leader with a strong record of developing student-athletes and building successful programs. His experience at the highest levels of college basketball makes this a tremendous hire for the College. We believe he will be a great fit for our students-athletes, our campus and our community.”
Barnes takes over an ICC program coming off one of its strongest seasons in recent history. The Indians finished the 2025-26 season with a 22-6 overall record, won the MACCC regular season championship for the first time since 2013-14 and advanced to the NJCAA Region 23 championship game.
For Barnes, the move to ICC marks a return to Mississippi basketball and a chance to lead one of the MACCC’s established programs.
Barnes is best known in Mississippi for his time at Ole Miss, where he played from 1985-88 before later returning to the program as an assistant coach and eventually head coach. As a player, Barnes earned All-SEC and honorable mention All-America honors before beginning a coaching career that has spanned more than three decades.
He was named head coach at Ole Miss in 1998 and led the Rebels to one of the best seasons in program history in 2000-01. That team won 27 games, captured the SEC Western Division championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Barnes was named Naismith National Coach of the Year and SEC Coach of the Year following that season.
After his time at Ole Miss, Barnes served as an assistant coach at Oklahoma before becoming head coach at Georgia State. He later spent 14 seasons as head coach at Cal State Bakersfield, where he guided the Roadrunners to the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 2016 and also led CSUB to postseason success in the NIT.
“Coach Barnes brings a level of experience, leadership and respect that will immediately benefit the program,” ICC Athletic Director Dr. Chad Case said. “He has won at a high level, recruited and developed outstanding players and built excellent programs everywhere he’s been. We are excited about the vision he brings and look forward to seeing him build on the program’s success.”
Barnes steps into a program with championship expectations and recent momentum. ICC’s 2025-26 team won 13 of 14 MACCC games, climbed into the national rankings and helped continue the program’s tradition of developing players for the next level.
Now, Barnes will look to build on that foundation while bringing his own standard to Fulton.
