Multiple sources have told me that UMBC Director of Recruiting/Program Development Griff Aldrich is the leader at Longwood. The Lancers Blog reported this first earlier today. Aldrich has been on Ryan Odom’s staff for the past two seasons, and is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College (located 6 miles from Longwood).
Aldrich is an interesting story…he spent time as an assistant at H-SC (under current William and Mary head coach Tony Shaver), got his law degree from UVA, became the Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer for the energy investment arm of one of the largest independent investment firms in the Asia-Pacific region, and he started his own AAU team in Houston (DeAndre Jordan played on it) – all before joining Odom’s staff. He is also tight with current Longwood President W. Taylor Reveley IV, who has been VERY involved with this search.
I have also heard of at least two current DIII head coaches who have kicked the tires on this one, but have decided to withdraw their names from consideration.
It sounds like this will wrap up shortly.
** Interesting connection with the three schools mentioned here: Longwood’s President is W. Taylor Reveley IV, William and Mary’s President is his father, W. Taylor Reveley III, and Hampden-Sydney’s former President is W. Taylor Reveley II, the father of III, and grandfather of IV. **
