Head Coach Adam Bohac announced that Ryan Mahoney has been promoted to Associate Head Coach of the Southern Nazarene men’s basketball program on Wednesday afternoon.

“Coach Mahoney is most deserving of the promotion to Associate Head Coach,” said Bohac. “He is a tireless worker who serves the players and SNU with tremendous passion.”

Mahoney just completed his fourth season at SNU and has been an instrumental part of taking the men’s basketball program to new heights. SNU won their second straight GAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship, the first program to ever accomplish this feat in GAC basketball history as well as the first time it had been done in SNU men’s basketball history.

Since his arrival on Coach Bohac’s staff, the Crimson Storm have compiled an overall record of 87-36 including a remarkable 66-22 record in the GAC and a 47-7 record inside the Sawyer Center. In the last two seasons, SNU has won 27 or more games in back-to-back seasons and has an astonishing 56-9 record including a 27-1 mark at home.

SNU’s 21-1 GAC record in 2017-18 set a new GAC mark for the best conference record in men’s basketball history.

SNU competed in the NCAA Central Region for the first time in 2017-18 and returned in 2018-19. The Crimson Storm earned their first ever NCAA postseason win in 2019, defeating St. Cloud State 81-61.

“Ryan is directly responsible for the success of our program the last few years and is involved in all aspects of our program,” added Bohac.

Before Mahoney arrived, SNU only had three total selections on the All-GAC team in their team history. Since his arrival, SNU has pushed that number up to 11 All-GAC honorees as well seven major award winners. Most recently, SNU had three selections on the first team All-GAC team for the first time ever as Jhonathan Dunn, Noah Starkey, and Micah Speight all earned the honor.

Starkey was also named GAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year while Dunn was the GAC Player of the Year in 2018. Bohac has earned back-to-back GAC Coach of the Year honors, which he would recognize as a staff award.

Dunn, Starkey, and Speight also all entered the 1,000 point club this past season under Mahoney’s direction with Dunn moving into the Top 10 all-time in career points.

“Coach Mahoney is a LiveLast leader who makes everyone around him better,” said Bohac. “Myself, our players, and our program are all beneficiaries of his outstanding work.”
