Montana State Billings assistant basketball coach resigns

Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets men’s basketball assistant coach Bobby Howard has resigned his post effective Friday March, 13. Howard completed his second year as an assistant for the Yellowjackets in 2019-20.

Prior to his time at MSUB, Howard served as assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks for four years alongside head coach Mick Durham. While at Alaska, Durham and Howard won 53 games with the Nanooks including a 22-8 season in 2015-16. The Nanooks finished that season with a 78-71 loss to Western Oregon in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship game, Alaska’s first-ever appearance in the GNAC final.

During his time at MSUB, the Yellowjackets complied a record of 26-31, 16-24 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, highlighted with a trip to the GNAC Tournament as the fifth seed during the 2018-19 season. The season ended in a 79-72 loss to WOU in the first round of the tournament.

“I would like to say thank you Krista, Dr. Edelman, the players and staff of MSUB,” commented Howard. “A special thanks to coach Durham for the opportunity to coach with him at MSUB and in Alaska. I am looking forward to a new challenge and being a fan. It was special to get to go to work and coach my brother every day. It will be something we both will look back on as an awesome experience.”

Howard will be leaving MSUB to take a job with Synergy Sports Technology. Synergy is a company that creates web-based, on demand video-supported basketball analytics for the purpose of scouting, development and entertainment. Synergy Partners with the National Basketball Association, the Women’s National Basketball Association, NCAA, the International Basketball Federation and International pro-basketball leagues.

“Bobby has been a great assistant for me for the last six years,” commented coach Durham. “He was a very valuable asset on the recruiting trail. He was important in establishing instant credibility with the state of Montana and has deep connections to the basketball community here which helped when recruiting MT student athletes. I hate to see him go but he has a great opportunity in front of him. I wish him the best and appreciate everything he has done for me and the two programs we have been a part of (UAF and MSUB) the past six years.”
