Mudge promoted to Associate Head Coach at Sam Houston State

Chris Mudge has been promoted to associate head coach of the Sam Houston men’s basketball team, head coach Jason Hooten recently announced.

Mudge has been an assistant coach for the Bearkats for 11 seasons under Hooten. During that time, Sam Houston has compiled a 216-136 overall record and 127-61 mark in the Southland Conference, produced five 20-win seasons and finished in the top three of the league six times.

The Bearkats won the SLC regular-season championship in 2019 and have qualified for the league’s postseason tournament in each of Mudge’s seasons on staff, reaching the finals in 2014 and 2015 and the semifinals in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Sam Houston also made an appearance in the NIT in 2019 and played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament four times.

“Chris is very deserving of this promotion and new title,” Hooten said. “He has been an integral part of our success here at Sam Houston the past 11 years. I appreciate his dedication and passion for Sam Houston and our student-athletes.”

The program has produced three Southland Conference Players of the Year, two Newcomers of the Year, one Defensive Player of the Year and 23 all-conference selections during that time as well.

Prior to joining the Bearkat staff, Mudge served as the assistant coach at Midland College for two years, helping lead the Chaparrals to a 63-7 record and back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national top-10 rankings.

Mudge oversaw skill development of Chaparral guards at Midland for teams that compiled a 33-4 record and reached the national championship finals in 2008-09 and went 30-3 and played in the regional final in 2009-10.

He is a graduate of Stony Point High School in Round Rock where he was the starting point guard and led his team to a top-10 ranking in the state.

Mudge earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2006 at the University of Texas where he served under head coach Rick Barnes with the Longhorn basketball team as head manager, recruiting assistant, camp coordinator and assistant video coordinator.
