NAIA Loyola University New Orleans adds Venzant as Assistant Basketball Coach

Loyola University New Orleans Men’s Basketball Head Coach Trey Lindsey announced on Tuesday that Daniel Venzant has been hired as an assistant coach.

“We’re excited to welcome Daniel to the Pack,” Lindsey said. “He joins us after two years of coaching at the Division I level, following a standout college career at both the Division I and II levels, finishing up his playing days for me at my alma mater, St. Edward’s University. He brings a relentless work ethic and will be an incredible resource for our players to learn from. Daniel is going to be a huge asset as we continue the tradition of winning in Uptown, New Orleans.”

Venzant joins the Wolf Pack after a successful stint at UT Rio Grande Valley, where he helped guide the Vaqueros to a 16-15 overall record during the 2023-24 campaign. Improving its win total by 10 games from the previous year, that mark represented the fourth-largest turnaround in NCAA Division I men’s basketball, showcasing his impact on program development and team performance.

“I am excited and thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this program,” Venzant said. “It’s a full-circle moment getting a chance to work with Coach Lindsey after playing for him at St. Edward’s. It was a no-brainer to join Coach Lindsey and this program. His passion, work ethic, and most importantly, his ability to connect with student-athletes and build relationships are high-level. I can’t wait to get started and build something special here at Loyola New Orleans.”

Prior to his time at UTRGV, Venzant served on the coaching staff at Liberty University, where he was instrumental in the Flames’ 18-win season. Liberty posted a 12-4 record at home and saw several student-athletes thrive under Venzant’s guidance. He oversaw the scout team and played a significant role in the individual on-court development of Liberty’s roster.

His efforts contributed to Kyle Rode and Zach Cleveland being named to the All-Conference USA Second Team, Kaden Metheny earning Third Team honors, and his brother, Joseph Venzant Jr., being named to the CUSA All-Defensive Team.

Before embarking on his coaching journey, Venzant played professionally in Mexico, Poland, and Macedonia, following a standout collegiate career that began at Cal State Fullerton. As a freshman, he helped the Titans win the Big West Tournament Championship, appearing in 24 games. After redshirting the 2018-19 season, he played in 26 games the following year, making seven starts.

Venzant then transferred to St. Edward’s University, where he played under head coach Andre Cook and Lindsey, who was an assistant. He made an immediate impact, earning Lone Star Conference Second Team honors in both 2020-21 and 2021-22. In his first year at SEU, he averaged 18.0 points and 5.7 assists per game, also earning a spot on the LSC All-Tournament Team. In his final season, he started all 29 games and posted averages of 16.8 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game.

He graduated from St. Edward’s in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts Administration in Sociology.
