After a 13-year coaching career at York University, Head Coach Tree Burks has announced this will be his final season leading the basketball program. Burks has served as head coach for the past nine years, following a four-year stint as associate head coach. His decision to step away comes after much prayer and reflection with his family.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” Burks said. “I’ve been blessed to be a part of three of arguably the best teams in the history of our program, including an MCAC Championship, a KCAC Championship, two NAIA Sweet 16 appearances, and an NAIA Elite Eight appearance. Seeing young men come through our program and give their lives to Christ has always been special to witness. I’m incredibly grateful to Delton Deal for the opportunity to join his staff at such a young age after my playing career and to Jared Stark for the chance to be head coach at my alma mater.”
Burks expressed heartfelt gratitude for the relationships he has formed over the years with colleagues, student-athletes, and the broader university community. “I came to York University in 2009 as a young man chasing a basketball dream and grew into a man here. My kids have literally grown up in the Freeman Center, creating precious memories for my wife and me,” he shared.
His decision to leave collegiate coaching is driven by a desire to spend more time with his family. “Spending time with my kids, watching them compete, and being more available to my wife and family is my number one priority,” he said. “Jordeyn has been amazing, sharing the kids and me with the student-athletes over the past decade. Being a coach’s wife isn’t easy, but we will both miss the relationships we’ve built.”
While Burks will miss daily interactions with his team, he looks forward to continuing his ministry of helping young people in new ways. “The ministry must continue, and I am excited to see what God has in store for me next,” he stated.
Reflecting on his time at York University, Burks extended his appreciation to all former players, coaches, graduate assistants, and managers. “I ultimately wanted to allow everyone to chase their dreams and create a better life for young people. You mean a lot to me,” he expressed.
York Director of Athletics Garrett Schwarz said “Coach Burks has had an incredible impact on the athletic department over the last decade plus. We will miss his leadership, his passion, and his ministry in the office and on the sideline. We wish him the best in his future endeavors and YU will always be his home.”
A national search for the next Panthers men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
