NAIA NEWS: Graceland Men’s Basketball Promotes Matt Dickman to Associate Head Coach

The Graceland University Athletic Department has announced the promotion of Matt Dickman from his role as Assistant Coach to Associate Head Coach entering the 2024-25 season.

Dickman is entering his second year at Graceland University in the 2024-25 season but it will be his fourth season on the sidelines with Head Coach Todd Lorensen. “Coach Dickman has an incredible passion for helping young men grow. Adding in his love for the game of basketball with our previous working relationship and he’s been the perfect fit to help our program take continued steps towards our goals,” said Lorensen. Prior to joining the program, Dickman has held positions in the NBA G-League, NCAA DI, NCAA DIII, NAIA, and NJCAA.

Graceland finished 3rd place in the Heart of America Conference during his first season, with many impressive offensive stats on the year under the direction of Dickman.

During the 2023-24 season, the offense thrived under Dickman’s guidance, averaging 79.6 points per game and improving to 80.6 points per game in conference play. The team also displayed efficiency, shooting 45.1% from the field overall and an even more impressive 46.1% in conference games. Its 3-point shooting improved as well, with the Yellowjackets hitting 32.3% of their attempts overall and elevating that mark to 34.0% in conference play.

Free throw accuracy was another area of strength, with Graceland making 72.7% of their attempts overall, showcasing the team’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Additionally, the team’s offensive efficiency was 1.058 overall and improved to 1.068 in conference play, a testament to the structured and disciplined approach implemented by Dickman.

Graceland’s offense also demonstrated strong ball movement, averaging 15.7 assists per game and increasing to 15.9 assists in conference matchups, indicating effective teamwork and a clear offensive strategy. Under Dickman’s leadership, the Yellowjackets secured an impressive 21-9 overall record and went 17-7 in conference play, contributing significantly to the team’s 20-win season.

“We are thankful to have Matt at Graceland University, and he has earned the opportunity to transition into this new role,” said Athletic Director Brady McKillip. “He was instrumental in our 20-win season during his first year. His attention to detail, both on and off the court, has not gone unnoticed in our department and across our campus.”

“Coach Dickman’s impact on our offense was evident from day one,” said Head Coach Todd Lorensen. “His ability to break down defenses and implement a system that allowed our players to play to their strengths played a significant role in our success last season. We’re excited to see him continue to elevate our program in his new role.”

“This year at Graceland University has been one of the most enjoyable in my coaching career. The atmosphere on our campus allows student-athletes to flourish both on and off the court. I want to thank Coach Lorenson for his humble leadership of this program and the opportunity to be a part of this tremendous staff,” says Dickman.

“Our student-athletes and other members of the athletic department make Graceland University a great place to work. The dedication, passion, and forward thinking of our administration, from Athletic Director Brady McKillip to President Schrock, has Graceland University positioned to be even stronger moving forward. I’m excited and thankful to be a small part of that.”

The 24-25 season begins on October 25th at Wartburg College. The home opener is set for 6 PM on October 28th as the Yellowjackets host former HAAC foe Avila University in the Morden Center.
