The Norfolk State Athletics Department announced today that former Coppin State assistant coach Kevin Jones has joined the Spartan men’s basketball program as an assistant coach.

Jones will replace former NSU assistant coach Kevin DeVantier, who left the program this summer to pursue other opportunities. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Jones will also handle the team’s workout and practice schedule, serve as the liaison for campus housing and the athletics academic department, handle film exchange and serve as the assistant recruiting coordinator.

“The addition of Kevin immediately strengthens our recruiting ties in the Maryland and D.C. area,” said NSU head coach Robert Jones. “It is a hotbed of budding talent, and it is an area into which we are looking to make more inroads. Kevin helps satisfy this need immediately. He is one of the top up and coming recruiters in the country, and we are lucky to have him here at NSU.”

Kevin Jones spent the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at MEAC rival Coppin State. A native of Baltimore, he was part of a staff that helped CSU lead the league in scoring last year and rank third in 3-point field goal percentage. The Eagles averaged better than 71 points per game and also ranked first in the MEAC and seventh in the nation with 9.5 3-point field goals per game.

Prior to his time at CSU, Jones spent two seasons as an assistant varsity coach at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. He also coached at the AAU level for six years from 2009-14. He graduated from Bowie State with a degree in sociology.

NSU is expected to announce a second assistant coach hire within the next week or two.
