Dickey Nutt, most recently the head coach at Southeast Missouri State, has joined Leonard Hamilton’s basketball staff at Florida State.
Nutt, the 1998 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, was the head coach at Arkansas State (1996- 2008) and at Southeast Missouri State (2010-2015) and led those programs to success on the national and conference levels. He guided Arkansas State to the NCAA Tournament in 1999; the first time the Indians had played in the NCAA Tournament. Nutt led Arkansas State to a pair of regular season championships in the Sun Belt Conference (1998 and 2007) and led Southeast Missouri to two consecutive top-two league finishes (2013 and 2014) in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Nutt established the Redhawks as one of the top and most consistent teams in the Ohio Valley Conference. Southeast Missouri annually ranked among the top offensive teams nationally and in the Sun Belt Conference. The team ranked second nationally in field goal percentage (.499), sixth in scoring offense (82.9 ppg) and assists (16.7 apg) during the 2013-14 season.
Nutt began his collegiate coaching as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State for two years before moving to Arkansas State, where he was an assistant coach for eight years. In 1995, Nutt was promoted to head coach and led the Indians to a Sun Belt Conference championship during the 1998-99 season, which led the first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
Nutt took over as head coach at Southeast Missouri State in 2009, steadily improved the team’s record each season.
Nutt takes over as Florida State’s video coordinator.
Nutt is the second of four sons, all of whom have had a hand in collegiate athletics throughout their careers.
Dickey’s older brother, Houston, is currently a college football studio analyst for CBS. Prior to becoming a television analyst he was head football coach at Ole Miss, Murray State, Boise State, and Arkansas. His younger brother, Danny, served as an assistant athletics director for player development at Ole Miss during Houston’s head coaching tenure, is the running backs coach at Eastern Illinois. Dickey’s youngest brother, Dennis, worked as a head basketball coach for Texas State for six years before becoming a scout for the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets). Currently he is the head coach of men’s basketball at Ouachita Baptist.
Nutt will take over his duties at Florida State starting immediately.
