We’ve mentioned this one back on 5/13 (DAILY DIRT). It’s now been made official. Here’s the release from ULM:
Isaac Fontenot-Amedee, who has 14 years of coaching experience at the junior college and high school levels, has been named assistant basketball coach at ULM, according to an announcement made by Warhawk head coach Keith Richard.
Fontenot-Amedee comes to ULM following a five-year stint as head coach at Clarendon (Texas) College where he compiled a 92-62 record (.597), including three-straight Region V playoff appearances for the first time in school history. In 2019-20, he led Clarendon College to its best record in school history (29-3) and highest-ever national ranking (No. 3) while winning both the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (14-2) and NJCAA Region V Championships while qualifying for its first-ever appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament before COVID-19 forced its cancellation. For his efforts, Fontenot-Amedee was selected Coach of the Year by the WJCAC and Region V Coach of the Year as well as Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Junior College Coach of the Year.
During Fontenot-Amedee’s tenure at Clarendon College, 11 different players signed National Letters of Intent with NCAA Division I programs, including 6-foot-7 forward Russ Harrison and 5-10 guard Elijah Gonzales who signed with ULM in April. Harrison was named NJCAA Division I All-American, WJCAC Newcomer of the Year and Player of the Year, NJCAA Region V Player of the Year as well as TABC Junior College Player of the Year after leading the Bulldogs in both scoring (18.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.2 pg.) last season.
“Isaac is a real hustler in the recruiting game,” Richard said. “He has a large network of contacts across the country, which will help us in recruiting. Isaac also is a good coach, as he led Clarendon College to one of their best seasons ever. The job he did at that school was remarkable. I’m so excited about him joining our coaching staff.”
Fontenot-Amedee previously spent four years (2013-15; 2018) as the head coach and coordinator for the Louisiana D1 Ambassadors traveling team, with 10 of his players signing National Letters of Intent with NCAA Division I programs including two players who reached the NBA, in Jarrell Brantley (Utah Jazz, 2019-20 roster) and Jemerro Jones (Los Angeles Lakers, 2018-19; NBA G League’s Wisconsin Herd, 2019-20).
He served as an assistant coach at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas, for two years as the Rebels posted a combined record of 58-12 (.829), including the 2014 Region V Championship and a third-place finish in the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament.
From 2010-12, Fontenot-Amedee worked for two seasons as an assistant coach at Dodge City (Kansas) Community College.
His high school coaching credits include stops at Family Christian Academy and Hosana Christian Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Central Lafourche in Raceland, La.; as well as Rossville (Tennessee) Christian Academy.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., Fontenot-Amedee earned a Bachelor of Science in health and physical education from Nicholls State in 2007.
