In yesterday’s Daily Dirt, I mentioned that this could be done in the next 24-48 hours…it’s done. Here’s the official release from West Liberty announcing the hiring of Michael Lamberti as their new men’s basketball head coach:
West Liberty University is proud to announce the hiring of Michael Lamberti as the new head coach of the Hilltopper men’s basketball program. A former standout player and longtime assistant coach at West Liberty, Lamberti returns to lead the program he has helped shape for more than a decade.
Lamberti brings valuable head coaching experience from his recent tenure at Coker University. Under his leadership, the team reached several program milestones, including setting a new school record by averaging 100.1 points per game—ranking third nationally—and posting single-game records for points scored (120 vs. Mars Hill) and three-pointers made (19 vs. Newberry).
A Hilltopper through and through, Lamberti previously served as lead assistant coach under Ben Howlett, playing a vital role in one of the most successful periods in program history. During his time on staff, West Liberty compiled a remarkable 135–21 record, captured multiple Mountain East Conference regular-season and tournament championships, and made several deep NCAA Division II Tournament runs, culminating in a national championship appearance in 2023.
As a student-athlete, Lamberti was known for his leadership, work ethic, and high basketball IQ—traits that continue to define his coaching style. His appointment marks a full-circle moment for both Lamberti and the Hilltopper program.
“I’m honored and excited to lead a program that has meant so much to me personally and professionally,” Lamberti said. “West Liberty basketball is built on tradition, culture, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. I can’t wait to get started with our players, staff, and the Topper Nation community as we build on that legacy. My family and I are thrilled to return to the hilltop.”
West Liberty Director of Athletics Brad Forshey expressed strong support for Lamberti’s return.
“Michael Lamberti is the epitome of a team player—loyal, professional, and deeply committed to the values that define West Liberty basketball,” stated Forshey. “He’s a proven recruiter, a respected leader, and someone who has always put the program first. As an alum, he understands what it means to wear the Hilltopper jersey. There’s no one better suited to continue the tradition of success that defines WLU Men’s basketball. Welcome home, Coach Lamberti.”
With Lamberti at the helm, the Hilltoppers look to continue their tradition of excellence as one of NCAA Division II’s premier basketball programs.
Lamberti and his wife, Emily—a West Liberty alum and former women’s basketball standout—reside in Wheeling, West Virginia, with their son, Enzo and newborn daughter Francesca.
