OFFICIAL: Maciariello out as Head Basketball Coach at Siena

Following-up on a report from earlier today. Carmen Maciariello is officially out as the head men’s basketball coach at Siena. Here is the statement that Siena released:

Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D’Argenio has announced that Carmen Maciariello will not return as the head coach of the men’s basketball program. A national search for the next Siena Men’s Basketball head coach will begin immediately.

“After thorough evaluation and careful consideration, we have decided to move forward in a different direction with our men’s basketball program,” said D’Argenio. “We appreciate the commitment that Carm has given to Siena College as its men’s basketball head coach. We had some early successes but, unfortunately, we were not able to build upon them over the past year and a half. The value of Siena Basketball to the College and the Capital Region makes a change in course necessary.”

Siena posted a 68-72 (.486) overall record in the five seasons that Maciariello led the men’s basketball program (2019-24), including a 53-43 (.552) mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. He directed the Saints to four straight top-three conference records to begin his tenure, highlighted by a regular season title and the awarding of a MAAC Tournament Championship in 2019-20 and a share of the MAAC Regular Season title in 2020-21. Off the court, Siena earned the program’s first two National Association of Basketball Coaches Team Academic Excellence Awards in 2019-20 and 2022-23, and were awarded the 2020 Autism Action Award by the New York State Assembly.

“First and foremost, I’d like to thank Br. Ed Coughlin and John D’Argenio for believing in me to lead this prestigious program,” said Maciariello. “It is with pride, honor, and dignity that I led every day. To all the amazing players that I was able to coach, I thank you for your tireless work ethic. Unfortunately, this is the nature of the business we are in and you are only as good as your last season, of which I am sorry for. Hopefully we will remember the back-to-back championships through COVID, the battles with a Hall of Fame coach, and the countless players that called Siena home before their next stop. Thank you to all for the support you have shown me and my family during my time at Siena.”

A 2001 Siena College graduate, Maciariello first rejoined his alma mater as the director of basketball operations under Siena Athletics Hall of Fame Coach Fran McCaffery for the 2005-06 season. He returned to Loudonville as an assistant coach in 2018-19, before being promoted to the program’s 18th head coach on Mar. 25, 2019.
