Following up on a rumor that HoopDirt.com posted yesterday…Enrico Mastroianni will become the fifth head coach in Marywood University men’s basketball history, Director of Athletics Dr. Mary Jo Gunning announced. Mastroianni spent the past three years as head coach of Division II Georgian Court University. Prior to that, he spent four years in the Colonial States Athletic conference as head coach of Centenary College (N.J.).

“I’m very excited and honored to be the men’s basketball coach at Marywood University,” Mastroianni said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to do what I love here in Scranton in front of my family and friends.”

A Scranton native and West Scranton High School graduate, Mastroianni was Georgian Court program’s first ever head coach, shortly after the school’s transition from an all-women’s institution to a co-ed university. Mastroianni doubled the team’s win total and halved the point differential in its second NCAA-sponsored season in 2014-15. He also served as Co-Coordinator of Service and Engagement at the Lakewood, N.J. school. Throughout his coaching experience, he developed 10 All-Conference players, including three First Team all-stars.

Prior to that, Mastroianni led Centenary to 45 wins from 2008-12, taking the Cyclones to the CSAC tournament in both 2009 and 2010. He instituted successful fundraising initiatives in place and grew the Cyclones’ camps and clinics programs fivefold. Mastroianni coached Ryan Kearny to ECAC South Region Third Team and Second Team All-Met awards. Centenary named him Coach of the Year in 2009.

“I would like to thank Dr. Mary Jo Gunning and the entire search committee for putting their faith in me to take Pacers men’s basketball to new heights,” he said. “I’m extremely grateful to be coming home.”

Mastroianni began his coaching career at Misericordia University as an associate coach and head of the junior varsity program for four seasons. He twice took the Cougars to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (now CSAC) semifinals. They won the PAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2008. Mastroianni was responsible for recruitment in the Tri-State region (N.Y./N.J./Pa.), coaching guard, academic coordination, fundraising for Ireland trip, and assistant director of the Cougar Basketball Camp.

At Misericordia, he was also employed as Act 101 Learning Specialist, Choice Academic Advisor, Target Student Mentor, Adjunct Faculty, Admissions Counselor, and Multicultural Mentor. As academic coordinator, he oversaw a team GPA of 3.2 each year.

Mastroianni received his Bachelor of Science in marketing and international business with a minor in international studies from The Pennsylvania State University in 1999. He received his teacher certification from Florida Atlantic University in 2004. Mastroianni earned a Master of Education from Misericordia in 2007.
