Drake University head men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries announced the addition of experienced Division-I assistant coach Tom Ostrom to his staff on Friday (July 1).
Ostrom most recently served a four-year stint as the associate head coach at Indiana University from 2017-21. Recognized for his strong recruiting, Ostrom helped Indiana produce the seventh best recruiting class nationally in 2018 as well as the No. 13 class in 2020.
“My family and I are extremely excited to be a part of the Drake family and the Des Moines community,” Ostrom said. “Drake is a special place and I am looking forward to developing relationships with our student-athletes both on and off the basketball floor. Over the past four seasons, Coach DeVries and his staff have built one of the most competitive basketball programs in the Missouri Valley Conference. Thank you to Coach DeVries and Brian Hardin for this incredible opportunity. We cannot wait to experience everything Drake and Des Moines has to offer.”
Prior to Indiana, Ostrom spent six seasons as an assistant coach on Archie Miller’s staff at the University of Dayton from 2011-17. With Ostrom’s tutelage, the Flyers qualified for four consecutive NCAA Tournaments including an Elite Eight appearance in 2014.
Ostrom worked as an assistant under John Pelphrey at the University of Arkansas (2007-11) and the University of South Alabama (2004-07). The Minnesota native aided Arkansas to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008. Prior to the stop in Fayetteville, Ostrom helped South Alabama to 24 wins and a Sun Belt title during the 2005-06 season.
He spent seven seasons on Billy Donovan’s staff at the University of Florida including five seasons as an administrative assistant/video coordinator from 1998-2002 before being promoted to assistant coach in 2003. While Ostrom was at Florida, the Gators played in the NCAA Tournament six times, advanced to the Sweet 16 twice and reached the NCAA championship game in 2000.
“We are very excited to add Tom to our coaching staff,” DeVries said. “He has a tremendous amount of experience and has been a key part of some very good programs. I really love Tom’s passion for the game and his desire to have a positive impact on the student-athletes in our program.”
Ostrom graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1997 with a degree in Sports Management and Human Development where he worked in the Golden Gopher men’s basketball program as an undergrad for Clem Haskins.
