Pujol inks contract extension at North Alabama

University of North Alabama men’s basketball head coach Tony Pujol has signed a five-year contract extension at the school. The deal runs through the 2025 season.

“I would like to thank President (Kenneth) Kitts, Provost Ross Alexander, Director of Athletics Mark Linder and everyone in the UNA athletic department,” said Pujol, who enters his third season at the helm of the program. “We are so appreciative of the commitment that the University of North Alabama has made to our program. We are ready for the season and excited for the program that we are building at UNA.”

Hired in 2018, Pujol became just the seventh head coach in the history of the UNA men’s basketball program. The Lions boast the richest collegiate men’s basketball tradition in the state of Alabama with 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight regional championships, five Final Fours and two national championships.

“Our men’s basketball program is heading in the right direction under Tony’s leadership,” said Linder. “I know our community and alumni are excited about the future of our men’s basketball program. This extension demonstrates our commitment to establishing North Alabama men’s basketball as a contender in the ASUN Conference.”

In the 2018-19 season, UNA posted a 10-22 record in its first season at the NCAA Division I level. The Lions improved to 13-17 the following year, including a higher finish in the ASUN Conference standings.
UNA qualified for the ASUN Tournament both seasons.

Entering the 2020-21 campaign, North Alabama returns four starters, including preseason ASUN All-Conference selections Jamari Blackmon and Emanuel Littles. UNA opens the season on Wednesday, Nov. 25, against Oakwood. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
