Frederick Community College has announced the hiring of Jack Schenzel as the new head coach of the Cougars men’s basketball program.
Schenzel brings nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience to FCC, highlighted by sustained success and a strong record of student-athlete development. Most recently, he served as head men’s basketball coach at Penn State Mont Alto, where he compiled an impressive 267-132 (.669) record over 15 seasons. Under his leadership, Mont Alto established itself as one of the premier programs in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC), earning six Coach of the Year honors, capturing three conference championships, and making 10 USCAA National Tournament appearances.
“What stood out most about Coach Schenzel during the search process was his ability to clearly articulate a vision for building a competitive, disciplined, and student-centered program,” said Director of Athletics Rodney Bennett. “He demonstrated a strong understanding of what it takes to recruit, develop, and retain student-athletes at the NJCAA level while emphasizing accountability and a strong team culture. His proven track record aligns closely with our goals for sustained competitiveness and student-athlete success.”
A proven winner, Schenzel consistently guided his teams to success on the court, including a 2025 PSUAC Tournament Championship and multiple regular-season titles. His programs produced 33 All-PSUAC selections, five Players of the Year, and 23 USCAA All-Americans—evidence of his ability to recruit, develop, and elevate talent while fostering a commitment to excellence.
Prior to Mont Alto, Schenzel spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program at Shippensburg University, his alma mater, where he contributed to player development, scouting, and recruiting. He also gained valuable experience coaching at the high school level in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, building a foundation for his program leadership.
A 1995 graduate of Shippensburg, Schenzel was a four-year member of the track and field team, earning All-ECAC and All-PSAC honors while helping the Red Raiders capture three conference championships.
“This is a great opportunity to coach the team here at FCC,” said Schenzel. “This program is a sleeping giant in the region, with great resources, strong support, and a deep recruiting pool. We will represent the college with great character, high energy, and success both in the classroom and on the court. Fans will enjoy the style of play we will bring to FCC.”
Schenzel is widely respected for his leadership, program-building approach, and commitment to student-athlete success. His teams have consistently excelled not only competitively but also academically, producing numerous USCAA Academic All-Americans during his tenure.
“Beyond basketball, I believe Coach Schenzel will have a meaningful impact as a mentor and leader,” Bennett added. “His emphasis on accountability, character development, and academic focus will help prepare our student-athletes for success during and after their time at FCC.”
